Next week the TDS Group will launch the first wave of its new regular national survey of landlords to explore their experiences of the private rented sector in England. The survey will complement the TDS Charitable Foundation’s regular Voice of the Tenant Survey and will include questions on historical changes to portfolios and landlord views on proposed regulatory reforms to the sector.
The TDS Group is committed to an evidence-based approach towards raising standards and developing policy in the private rented sector. Gaining the perspectives of both landlords and tenants will provide a more complete picture of the sector’s trends and challenges, and how these are changing over time.
The landlord survey will examine landlord characteristics, challenges faced, as well as behaviours and decision making in respect to key issues addressed within the tenant survey, which include affordability, tenure security and property conditions. The landlord survey will be repeated on a six-monthly basis alongside the TDS Charitable Foundation’s tenant survey to explore how landlords and tenants are experiencing an evolving housing market over time.
It is hoped that both surveys will provide valuable evidence for researchers, practitioners and policymakers who are concerned with improving the sector and introducing effective regulatory interventions that work for both tenants and landlords.
The project will be managed by the TDS Policy and Research Team. Data sampling, collection and analysis will be carried out by the external research company Insight Advantage.
